VOLUNTEERS: ESL and BL Tutoring Program

  • Ability to make a minimum one-year commitment.
  • Ability to commit to a minimum of four hours each week--
    • Meet for two hours each week with a small group of adult students, preferably one hour twice a week (one-on-one matching is also available), plus
    • Spend approximately two hours each week preparing lessons and traveling to and from tutoring sessions (actual time spent is dependent on lesson planning needs and distance from tutoring location).
  • Willingness to provide status and progress information each month about your student.
  • Patience (adults learn more slowly than children).
  • Flexibility (our students have busy lives, too!).


  • You should be 18 or older
  • You should be able to speak, read, and write English fluently
  • No foreign language experience is necessary
  • No prior teaching experience is necessary
  • Steps to become a Tutor:

1. Register for a volunteer orientation (required):

2. Once you have attended orientation, you will be able to register for a two-day tutor training workshop:

  • There is a $25 one-time fee to take the training workshop


  • Desire to help support tutors by relaying their questions and materials requests to the office staff.
  • 1 – 2 hours per month to call or email assigned tutors.
  • Ability to submit reports to the LCMC office in a timely manner each month.


 



ESL Class Programs

  • You should be 18 or older
  • Available for a daytime or evening assignment.
  • Ability to contribute at least 3 hours per week (more hours needed at the beginning and end of the class session).
  • Detail oriented with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Experience administering standardized tests.
  • Bilingual volunteers especially welcome!



We currently have enough teaching assistants to help us with our fall 2011 classes.  Please consider volunteering for one of our other opportunities.
  • You should be 18 or older
  • Experience with ESL and/or classroom experience required.
  • Available for a daytime or evening assignment.
  • Ability to contribute at least 3 hours per week.
  • Reliability – lead teachers will be depending on you!


 

 


English for Daily Living Program

  • Classroom teaching experience,
  • Experience teaching adults for whom English is a second language,
  • Enthusiasm for working with adult learners, and
  • Availability to teach eight 2-hour weekly classes.




  • Interest in working with adults for whom English is a second language, and
  • Availability to assist during eight 2-hour weekly classes.


 


Conversation Classes

  • Interest in working with adults for whom English is a second language, and
  • Availability to lead the class two hours per week on a regular schedule.


  • Training is provided
  • Volunteer positions available depending on learner interest and location.

Computer-Based Language Lab

  • Must be 15 years or older
  • Experience with Windows-based computing
  • Able to attend a short orientation session to become familiar with Rosetta Stone and Lexia SOS Software, as well as LCMC Lab policies and procedures
  • Able to work independently
  • Able to work in the Lab at the LCMC’s Rockville office a minimum of 3 hours per week, during the LCMC’s staffed office hours Monday through Friday
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Comfortable working with people of limited English proficiency (knowledge of a foreign language is not necessary)

GED-i Entry Program

  • A bachelor’s degree
  • Middle or high school teaching experience in math and/or language arts preferred
  • Flexibility required as weekly hours may vary

To Volunteer as a Data Entry Volunteer

Help track student progress and volunteer information – data that is essential for the LCMC’s operation.  Become familiar with database architecture and the effects on the user; learn about adult literacy in the process.  This position has been approved for MCPS Student Service Learning.  For more information, contact Kim Brown at 301-610-0030 or kim@literacycouncilmcmd.org
