Each year over 600
volunteer tutors provide ESL and Basic Literacy tutoring to more
than 1000 adult learners, teaching small groups or one-on-one.
Qualifications
- Must be at least 18 years old
- Speak, read and write English fluently
- Attend information session about the Literacy Council
- Complete the Literacy Council tutor training workshop
- Be patient, flexible and supportive, able to related to
culturally and economically diverse individuals
Time Requirements
- Plan to set aside at least 4 hours a week (include
teaching, lesson preparation and planning, travel and
reporting)
- Commit to working with a a learner for a minimum of one
year. We hope you stay even longer!

In case of inclement weather,
please call the Literacy Council at 301-610-0030 to find out if the
office has a delayed opening or has been closed, or if the
orientation or workshop has been cancelled. A decision will be
made by 7:00 a.m. in the event of questionable conditions and we
will leave the announcement on the Council outgoing message and via
WTOP AM radio (AM 1500).
ESL class teaching
assistants support our paid instructional staff in the LCMC's ESL
class program by following up with learners who miss class,
checking homework and providing occasional tutoring.
Qualifications
- You should be 18 or older
- Experience with ESL and/or classroom experience required.
- Available for a daytime or evening assignment.
- Ability to contribute at least 3 hours per week.
- Reliability – lead teachers will be depending on you!
The LCMC’s 8-week “English for Daily Living” life-skills classes give busy parents a way to learn simple contextual English in a short program conducted at their children’s school. The
once/week classes of 15-20 adult learners are taught by volunteer teams of lead teachers and classroom assistants.
EFDL Lead Teacher Qualifications
- Classroom teaching experience,
- Experience teaching adults for whom English is a second language,
- Enthusiasm for working with adult learners, and
- Availability to teach eight 2-hour weekly classes.
- Interest in working with adults for whom English is a second language, and
- Availability to assist during eight 2-hour weekly classes.
Family Literacy
Plan and lead up to 8 fun literacy activities per semester for
approximately 20 children. Help plan and participate in up to
4 family literacy events during the school year.

Conversation classes are a great place for new English learners to practice and develop their skills in American idiomatic English in a supportive and friendly environment.
Qualifications
- Interest in working with adults for whom English is a second language, and
- Availability to lead a weekly 1.5-2 hour class on a regular schedule.
LCMC offers entry pre-testing for the Maryland GED-i program, a free, teacher-supported online learning program for GED (General Educational Development) test preparation offered to Maryland residents.
Instructional volunteers are needed to tutor learners at pre-GED levels in reading and/or math. Volunteers will provide instruction to those learners who need modest academic support in order to qualify for the Maryland State Department of Education’s GED-i course. Volunteers and students will meet at mutually convenient times and
and public places.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree
- Middle or high school teaching experience in math and/or language arts preferred
- Flexibility required as weekly hours may vary

Entry Volunteer
Help track student
progress and volunteer information – data that is essential for the
LCMC’s operation. Become familiar with database architecture and
the effects on the user; learn about adult literacy in the
process. This position has been approved for MCPS Student Service
Learning. For
