Student Story: Marian

November 2nd, 2014

MARIAN - USEMarian knows about challenges.  A native of Gambia, Marian had no formal education and knew no English when she came to the United States.  She could not write letters of the alphabet, not even to write her name.  Her husband took care of everything for the family, so she felt no urgency to learn English; but then he died.

As a widow with three young children and a full-time job, Marian realized that things had to change. “I didn’t even know my children’s pediatrician’s name,” she recalls.  Marian came to the Literacy Council and pushed herself to the limit.

She now proudly writes her own name and address, reads on her own, and is speaking English, thanks to the Literacy Council and her tutor.  “My English has improved tremendously. Some people from foreign countries go to school for years to learn English and my English is better than many.”
