MY EXPERIENCE LEARNING ENGLISH IN USA

By Carmen Montesdeoca

ESL Skill Book 4

Since 2006 I started learning American English when a friend told me about the Literacy Council Program. She made the subscription for me. In this place I met my teacher Mr. Calvin. He taught with patience and continues teaching me. While I was studying English with Mr. Calvin I took an accounting course and passed with excellent grades. This was fantastic and gave me much more eagerness to learn English. Also in my daily life I feel more comfortable speaking English in my work, in my son's school and simply in the street. To me learning English is very important, because I am living and working in the United States and I would like to speak English fluently.

I liked to study English in the Literacy Council Program and I have recommended to other people to go to the Literacy Council Program to learn English.

Cal Olano, Carmen's tutor, has been teaching her for almost five years.  Although Cal moved from Montgomery County to Anne Arundel County, he continues to work with Carmen on a regular basis -- even though Carmen has actually completed Skill Book 4.  Cal tells us that Carmen spoke very little English when she came to the U.S. from Ecuador, and has made tremendous progress.  "She is very intelligent, enthusiastic, hard-working, and she strives to get ahead."

I have been studying English at the Literacy Council of Montgomery County's ESL program.  I met a devoted volunteer tutor.  Her name is Maria T. Boranano.  I am happy that I could learn a lot of English, especially speaking, reading, and writing.  My tutor always encouraged me so that I could understand English better.  I want to improve my English skills so, later on, I will speak English very well.  If so, my life would also be better.  I wish to try to give help to somebody else who may need help, just like me.

Tutor Connie Paulson shared this update regarding her student:

Amy Chan, her husband, son and daughter just returned from a 6-week trip to their native China.  The visit was her first after living in New York and Maryland for 20 years.  They visited her husband's home town, but not hers, since she said she knows no one living there any more.  She was very excited and animated when she described all the places they visited, both popular tourist attractions as well as more remote locations.  However, the trip affirmed for her that she feels much more comfortable living here in the States than in China
