How Do I Become a Volunteer?
Attend a Tutor Information Session in person to get started toward volunteering!
ESL & Basic Literacy Tutor
Purpose: To help adult learners gain a better understanding of the English language skills including reading, writing, speaking, and listening.
Location: A mutually accessible public location in Montgomery County assigned by a LCMC staff member.
- The tutor must be able to meet at a regularly scheduled time
- Be able to tactfully and effectively teach English language skills
- Be compassionate and understand the student’s needs and desires for learning English
Length of Appointment: 50-hour minimum volunteer commitment.
Time Commitment: Required minimum 2 hours a week tutoring and 2 hours a week preparing.
Qualifications: Native or fluent speaker of English. Equivalent writing abilities.
Training/Support: The Literacy Council provides all the necessary training, materials, and resources for English tutors. Each tutor will be assigned a coordinator who will serve as their main point of contact and help guide their tutoring sessions. Tutor must attend a 1-hour Info Session in-person or online, and a 6-hour in-person training.
