Literacy Doesn’t Take a Summer Break! Continuing Tutor Education sessions are scheduled throughout the summer.
- Tutoring Adult Learners Coping with Mental Illness
Monday, August 3, 10:30 am – 12:00 pm
Rockville Library, 1st floor meeting room
Facilitator: Veronica Vasquez, Program Supervisor for Cornerstone Montgomery
Coping with mental illness is hard enough, but struggles only increase when an individual cannot read or write. Past struggles with reading in school may have contributed to a client’s anxiety or social isolation. We invite tutors to attend a session on helping adult learners with a history of mental illness. Tutors will receive an overview of mental illness and approaches for working with this population. To RSVP, email Susan or call 301-610-0030, ext. 207.
- Teaching Reading & Spelling to Students Who May Have Disabilities
Wednesday, August 5, 6:30 pm – 8:00 pm
Rockville Library, 2nd floor meeting room
Facilitator: Susan Zagar, Basic Literacy Coordinator
While the Literacy Council does not diagnose for learning disabilities, it may become evident through the initial interview process or during initial tutoring sessions that some of our adult learners present specific learning challenges. Susan will discuss the myth versus fact on student’s ability to learn and will offer different strategies that tutors can use to be more effective in teaching learners who may have learning disabilities. NOTE: Pre-registration is required as attendees will be required to do some pre-workshop activities. To RSVP, email Susan or call 301-610-0030, ext. 207.
