FALL CONTINUING TUTOR EDUCATION (CTE)
►Citizenship & Naturalization – A panel discussion for students (tutors are also invited to attend)
A representative from the U.S. Customs and Immigration Service and a lawyer will cover topics such as the naturalization process, green card guidelines, visas, work authorization, asylum…and more.
They will conduct a mock interview so that students (and tutors) can see how the process works. There will be time at the end of the session to ask questions about issues specific to the attendees.

Students are welcome to bring a friend or family member for translation assistance.

Featured Guest Speaker:
County Executive Isiah Leggett
Please join us for the LCMC's annual potluck dinner for students, tutors, and volunteers! The event will be held on Wednesday, September 29 from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at St. Mark Presbyterian Church, 10701 Old Georgetown Road, Rockville. Click here for directions.
We will be honoring students who have attained citizenship or completed Skill Book 4 during our past fiscal year (July 1, 2009 - June 30, 2010). We are proud of their accomplishments and want to recognize them for their hard work! Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will deliver remarks.
(If you haven't already reported your student's accomplishments, please let us know - otherwise your student will miss out on this special honor). In order for your student to officially "graduate," we must have the Skill Book 4 check up.
The potluck is a great opportunity for students, tutors and volunteers to meet, and share delicious food. We encourage each guest to contribute a dish, and especially welcome food from students' native countries. Be sure to bring the recipe, which will be included in a future LCMC cookbook.
To RSVP, please call 301.610.0030 or email info@literacycouncilmcmd.org.
By Jayne Klein, LCMC Librarian
In the past, the Literacy Council has provided free student newspapers to tutors as a supplement to their lessons. Through the generosity of one of our tutors, Sandra Lebowitz, we are able to continue providing monthly issues of Easy English News starting in September. If you wish to receive Easy English News from September through June and are able to pick it up monthly at your library, please contact jayne@literacycouncilmcmd.org, and indicate the library branch at which you will pick it up.

Tutors, d
o you want to help the Literacy Council reduce expenses? An easy way to do this is to return books on loan to you that you are not currently and actively using with your student. We are very short on funding for replacing books this year. Every book you return represents a book-replacement cost savings which can range from $8 for a copy of More Stories, to $35 for a Stand Out Lesson Planner. Simply package up your books, mark the package LITERACY COUNCIL – ROCKVILLE LIBRARY, take it to the circulation desk of any MCPL branch, and ask to have it delivered to us via the free inter-library “pony”.
Do you have an hour or two to assist young adults with mild
to moderate disabilities?
LCMC has a partnership with Target Community & Educational Services,
a community organization that provides programs for adults with
disabilities. LCMC volunteer tutors help Target clients with
literacy skills such as filling out applications and reading
instructions, and also work on reading and writing for pleasure.
Additional tutors are needed for this program. Experience with
students with disabilities is not required, and this opportunity is
open to both ESL and Basic Literacy tutors. If you are interested in
volunteering, please email
Mike Trageser or call 301-610-0030.

effort begins with preparation."

LCMC tutor Ron Wiles helps his students prepare by emailing each participant in his group a lesson before class. Way to go, Ron!

Celebrate Adult Education and Family Literacy Week 2010!
September 13 – 19, 2010 is Adult Education and Family Literacy Week! Recently passed by the U.S. House of Representatives and supported by the National Coalition for Literacy, this is a one-time only dedication to raise public awareness of adult education and family literacy, assist adult learners in need of literacy services, and support increased access to adult education and family literacy programs. Use this opportunity to elevate adult education and family literacy nationwide with policymakers, the media, and the community. It's the perfect time to tell everyone you know about the work of the LCMC and its impact on our learners. For more information, click here.
It's not just a way
for individuals to keep in touch with friends. It has become a very
powerful networking tool for nonprofits to create awareness and
connect with others. It is an ideal forum for our organization,
whose volunteers are scattered throughout the county and rarely meet
in person.
It’s easy to visit the LCMC’s Facebook page. Enter "Literacy Council of Montgomery County" in the search box and scroll down to find the LCMC (you'll be amazed at how many Literacy Councils there are out there!)
You'll see postings from LCMC staff with updates, news, and reflections on the work our organization does in the community. Join the discussion – your fellow volunteers and supporters would love to hear what you have to say about why YOU have chosen to spend your time and talent on the cause of adult literacy. It’s a great place to pose questions and share teaching ideas. Become a fan!
